Moses Garoëb

Moses Mague ǁGaroëb (born April 14, 1942 in Arixas near Mariental , South West Africa , † September 19, 1997 in Windhoek ) was a Namibian politician and founding member of SWAPO .

Life path

ǁGaroëb was born to Damara Samuel Geingob and Rebecca Geingos. At the age of 17 he took part in the demonstrations about the forced relocation from the old location to Katutura during apartheid . He experienced the massacre on December 12, 1959 first hand. Two years later, ǁGaroëb went into exile as a member of SWANU and joined SWAPO that same year.

In the early 1960s he began studying in the United States and appeared before the United Nations . ǁGaroëb received a BA in Political Science from the University of Rochester in New York . In 1966 he returned to Africa and initially settled in Tanzania . Here he worked at Radio Tanzania and presented The Namibia Hour ( German The Namibian Hour ). He was also the editor of the SWAPO newspaper Namibia Today . In 1969 he rose to the party's Central Committee and Politburo . He held these positions until his death in 1997. From 1990 to 1995 he was also Secretary General of SWAPO. ǁGaroëb was a member of the Constituent Assembly of Namibia in 1989 and then a member of the National Assembly . From 1995 until his death two years later, he was Minister in the Ministry of Labor and Labor Development .  

ǁGaroëb died on September 19, 1997 of complications from diabetes . On September 27, 1997, he received a state funeral in the Old Location cemetery.
