John Shaetonhodi

John Mueneni Shaetonhodi (born May 1, 1949 in South West Africa ) is a former Namibian politician of the SWAPO and trade unionist . He was Minister for Labor and Labor Development in the Nujoma II cabinet from 1997 to 1999 .

A school in the constituency of Ongenga is named after Shaetonhodi .

Professional background

Shaetonhodi worked at NAMDEB in the 1980s and became the first president of the Namibian Miners' Union (MUN), which he chaired from 1986 to 1995. He lived and worked in Oranjemund at the time . In April 1979, Shaetonhodi was arrested without charge by South African security forces as part of the Namibian liberation struggle . He was imprisoned until January 1980 and then placed under house arrest until 1983 .

In 1995 Shaetonhodi became a member of the Namibian National Assembly and was immediately appointed Vice Minister of Labor. After the death of his boss Moses ǁGaroëb , he headed the ministry for two years until 1999. Shaetonhodi then moved to the department for public works and transport as deputy minister until 2002 . In 2001 he was appointed managing director of the state railway company TransNamib , since he left in 2007. He was also accused of nepotism .
