Ben Amathila

Ben Amathila (born October 1, 1938 in Walvis Bay , South West Africa , today Namibia ) is a Namibian politician and former minister and freedom fighter .

He is the husband of the former Vice Prime Minister Libertina Amathila .

Political career

Amathila was involved in Namibia's liberation efforts from 1959 . Until he went into exile in 1966, he was actively involved in building up SWAPO. In 1969 he was a leading figure in the SWAPO Congress in the Tanzanian thong . A little later he became the representative of SWAPO in Scandinavia and later SWAPO's economic secretary in Lusaka ( Zambia ) and Luanda ( Angola ).

Amathila was a member of the National Assembly from 1990 to 2007 from Namibia's independence . Between 1990 and 1993 he was Minister of Commerce before he was Minister of Information until 2000 . After falling out of favor with then President Sam Nujoma , he lost his ministerial post in the Nujoma III cabinet from 2000. In 2007 he resigned as a member of parliament at his own request. Until then he kept a critical position towards the ruling SWAPO .
