Helmut Angula
Helmut Kangulohi Angula (born November 11, 1945 in Ontananga , South West Africa , today Namibia ) is a Namibian politician ( SWAPO ) and author.
Angula grew up at Olukonda and joined SWAPO in 1963 at the age of 18. He initially took on key roles in the organization's public relations work, but went into exile in Botswana as early as 1966 and a little later in Zambia . After graduating from high school in Kabwe (1969), he only came to Cuba through political contacts and to the USSR in the early 1970s . In Cuba, Helmut Angula obtained a diploma in international relations from the Academy of the Cuban Foreign Ministry and in the Soviet Union a Master of Science in biology from Voronezh State University (1975).
After graduation, he returned to Nyango, Zambia, and was elected to the SWAPO Central Committee in 1976 and later became a member of the party's Politburo. Angula was 1989 member of the Constituent National Assembly, and from 1990 to 2005 member of the National Assembly . During this time he was minister in various departments:
- Minister for Fisheries (1991-1995),
- Minister of Finance (1995-1996),
- Minister for Agriculture, Water and Rural Development (1996-2005),
- Minister for Public Works and Transport (2008-2010).
In 1988 he published the autobiographical novel The Two Thousand Days of Haimbodi ya Haufiku , which tells of the Namibian struggle for independence from 1966 to 1975.
During his political career, he has come into disrepute in the past because of his conservative attitudes and derogatory statements towards homosexuals and emancipated women. Helmut Angula is married and has three children.
