Richard Nchabi Kamwi (born June 3, 1950 in Ioma , South West Africa ) is a Namibian politician for SWAPO who was Minister of Health and Social Services between 2005 and 2015 .

Life

After attending Kizito High School, Kamwi worked as an organizer of the South-West Africa People's Organization ( SWAPO ). In 1976 he began studying public health at Technikon Mmadikoti in Pietersburg , which he graduated with a diploma in 1980. Subsequently, in 1980 he became the first colored inspector of the health service in Katima Mulilo , but lost this post in 1984 due to his political activities. Because of his activities, he was arrested in 1985 and detained in Katima Mulilo and Kalimbeza, where he was tortured by the South African security authorities. After his escape, he went into exile in Botswana in January 1986 . There he joined the paramilitary organization People’s Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN) and took part in the Namibian liberation struggle against South Africa until 1989 .

After independence from South Africa on March 21, 1990, he worked as Chief Inspector of the Health Service until 1994 and also studied at the University of Liverpool between 1991 and 1994 , completing a Master of Science degree. Subsequently, between 1994 and 1996 he was chief official for public hygiene and during this time acquired a Doctor of Philosophy ( Ph.D. ) at the University of Namibia (UNAM), founded in 1992, with a research thesis on the subject of the malaria situation in Namibia: A Study of Vector and Parasite Species Transmission, Prevalence and Effectiveness of the Past and Current Control Strategies . He then headed the National Program for the Control of Infectious Diseases caused by vectors from 1996 to 1999 .

In the elections on November 30 and December 1, 1999 , Kamwi became a member of parliament for the first time and has been a member of it ever since. In March 2000 he was first elected Deputy Minister for Health and Social Services and in 2002 also a member of the Central Committee (ZK) of SWAPO. On March 21, 2005, he succeeded Libertina Amathila in the first cabinet of President Hifikepunye Pohamba as Minister of Health and Social Services . He held the ministerial office for ten years until March 21, 2015 and was then replaced by Bernhard Haufiku .
