Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila (born October 12, 1967 in Okahao , South West Africa , today Namibia ) is a Namibian politician ( SWAPO ) and has been Namibia's Prime Minister since March 21, 2015 . She had previously been the country's finance minister since 2005 . She is the first woman to head the Namibian government.

Life

Kuugongelwa went into exile in 1980 and lived in Sierra Leone from 1982 . She went to school there in Koidu and later emigrated to the USA to study . In 1994 she graduated from Lincoln University, Pennsylvania , with a degree in economics .

Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila was Chair of the Council of Ministers of the Customs Union of Southern Africa from 2004 to 2005 and from 2009 to 2010 . From 2005 to 2015 she was Minister of Finance in the cabinet of President Hifikepunye Pohamba . She has been Prime Minister in the cabinet of President Hage Geingob since 2015 .
