Koidu-Sefadu (formerly also Kono and Koidu , now also called New Sembehun ) is a city in Sierra Leone . It is the capital of the Kono district and is located in the Gbense -hiefdom in the Eastern -Province.

The population grew sharply between the 1963 and 1974 censuses from 16,439 to 75,846 residents. During this time it has grown together with the city of Sefadu (also called New Sembehun ) to the southwest of it . That is why it is also called Koidu-Sefadu . In 1985 there were then 82,474 inhabitants. During the civil war in Sierra Leone , the city almost became a ghost town. But the 2015 census counted almost 129,000 residents. Most of the residents belong to the Kono ethnic group .

After diamond discoveries in the vicinity of Soston, the city grew rapidly and became a center of the region and of the Sierra-Leonean diamond mining.
