The Eastern Province ( German  Eastern Province ) comprises the east of the West African state of Sierra Leone . It has 1,642,370 inhabitants (as of 2015) and an area of ​​15,553 square kilometers .

Eastern comprises the three districts of Kailahun , Kenema and Kono and is further subdivided into 44 chiefdoms . The provincial capital is Kenema , which is also the capital of the Kenema district.

Infrastructure

The province had 216 health facilities in 2006, including only three state hospitals. There is only one doctor for every 120,000 inhabitants. 950 primary schools and 65 secondary schools can be found in the province, half of them in the Kenema district . There are 49 vocational schools across the province. 25 percent of the residents have access to drinking water. Almost 61 percent of the residents have access to safe drinking water, five percent are connected to the public power grid.

economy

The economy of the Eastern Province is mainly characterized by mining and agriculture . Mainly rice , coffee beans , cocoa beans and palm oil are obtained. Almost 68 percent of the population live in poverty .
