Koinadugu is a district in the Northern Province in the north of Sierra Leone , on the border with Guinea . Its capital is Kabala . The district is divided into numerous chiefdoms (chiefdoms).
Koinadugu covered an area of 12,121 square kilometers, making it the largest and most sparsely populated district in Sierra Leone. It was divided into two districts in 2017. Falaba emerged from this as a new district .
Lake Sonfon is located in Koinadugu .

Koinadugu has 204,264 (as of 2020) inhabitants. The inhabitants of Koinadugu mainly belong to the Limba , Kuranko and Jalonke ethnic groups and the majority are Muslim.
Infrastructure and economy
The district had 43 health facilities in 2006, including a state hospital. In 2005, 3% of residents were HIV positive, which is the highest rate in the country. In 2004/2005 there were 234 primary and eight secondary schools. The literacy rate is the lowest in the country at 21% (30% for men and 14% for women), as is the proportion of children attending school (31.2%).
The economy of the Koinadugu district consists of gold and diamond mining, cattle breeding and palm oil production.
