Elections in Sierra Leone

In elections in Sierra Leone there are at least six different regular occasions on which they take place in Sierra Leone . All elections are based on the Constitution of Sierra Leone and the Electoral Laws Act, 2002 with amendments from 2002 and 2007 and the 2012 Public Elections Act.

Sierra Leone, as a democratic state, is based on a multi-party system . Sierra Leone is currently (as of 2014) divided into 112 constituencies for parliamentary and presidential elections.

Suffrage

The right to vote in Sierra Leone have all Sierra Leonean citizens who have reached the age of 18. The stand for election , every Sierra Leonean citizen who has reached the age of 21. In the case of the presidential election, this person must be at least 40 years old.

Presidential election

The President is since the first election in 1985 every five years after the majority vote by direct selected, general, secret, equal and free choice. Whoever can get at least 55% of the votes in the main election or the majority in a runoff election is elected President.

houses of Parliament

The parliamentary elections are held every five years since the 1991st Political parties that have been approved by the electoral commission beforehand are elected using direct voting rights . According to the constitution, parliament consists of at least 60 people and consists of an elected Paramount Chief from each district , i.e. 12 people and one representative from each constituency (112 people).

PCMP

In the so-called PCMP elections ( English Paramount Chief Member of Parliament Elections ), the 12 representatives of the districts are elected every five years. The Paramount Chiefs represent these districts as members of parliament. The Paramount Chiefs are elected by a simple majority .

Local councils

In the local council elections every five years with a simple majority, a political representative is elected as councilor per ward (in German  about department ). These councilors together each form the administration of one of the 19 local administrations ( English councils ). Currently (as of March 2014) there are 394 wards nationwide.

District Chairs and Mayors

In the district and mayoral elections every four years (by a simple majority in direct mayors or district chairman English District Chairman ) selected. Currently (as of 2017) there are 16 district chairpersons and seven mayors.

Village chairman

Village chairmen are elected by direct election every three years with a simple majority. Elections will only take place in the Western Area Rural District . There are 96 villages here.
