Parliamentary election in Sierra Leone 1962
The parliamentary elections in Sierra Leone in 1962 took place on May 25, 1962 in Sierra Leone . It was the first general election for Parliament after independence from the United Kingdom .
There were 62 seats to choose from, for which 216 candidates applied. Four unopposed seats went to the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP), two to the All People's Congress (APC) and one to an independent candidate. The SLPP submitted a total of 59 candidates, the APC 32, the Sierra Leone Progressive Independence Movement (SLPIM) and the United Progressive Party (UPP) four each. There were 17 independent candidates.
Result
The SLPP under Prime Minister Milton Margai won the election, although it received fewer votes than independent candidates.
