Parliamentary election in Sierra Leone 2018

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2018 parliamentary elections in Sierra Leone are the elections for the unicameral parliament in Sierra Leone . They were held on March 7, 2018 instead and thus not in rotation after five years, ie 2017. The reason for this decision was a September-December 2017 referendum hold.

background

The elections took place together with the presidential and local elections, which the Sierra Leone parliament initially rejected in 2015 . In June 2016, the postponement to 2018 was finally approved.

Organization and election process

In the run-up to the elections, voter registration and the allocation of new constituencies took place until September 2017 . There are 3,178,663 registered voters for the election . The party registration took place between December 7, 2017 and January 10, 2018.

The election was accompanied by election observer missions from the European Union , ECOWAS , Commonwealth , the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa and The Carter Center . They basically described the election as free and fair, but called for “intimidating measures” in the election campaign.

According to the Sierra Leonean Election Commission, the elections were free, fair and with almost no problems. Irregularities were found in only 37 out of 17,745 ballot boxes.

Election result

The official election results were announced from March 14, 2018.
