Presidential election in Sierra Leone 2018

President-elect Julius Maada Bio

In the 2018 presidential election in Sierra Leone , the country's citizens were able to vote on a new president . The first round was held on March 7, and thus not in rotation after five years, ie 2017. This was due to the decision, one from September to December 2017 referendum hold. In the runoff election that had become necessary on March 31, the opposition-backed Julius Maada Bio prevailed against the ruling party-sponsored Samura Kamara .

An objection to the result was presented to the Constitutional Court on April 9, 2018.

background

The elections took place together with the parliamentary and local elections , but this was initially rejected by the Parliament of Sierra Leone in 2015 . In June 2016, the postponement to 2018 was finally approved.

Organization and election process

In the run-up to the elections, voter registration and the allocation of new constituencies took place until September 2017 . There are 3,178,663 registered voters for the election . The nomination of the presidential candidates took place between January 17th and 26th, 2018. There was a nomination fee of 100 million leones per presidential candidate . The election was accompanied by election observer missions from the European Union , ECOWAS , Commonwealth , the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa and The Carter Center .

According to the Sierra Leonean Election Commission, the elections were free, fair and with almost no problems. Irregularities were found in only 37 out of 17,745 ballot boxes.

Sierra Leone is the first country in the world to use the so-called blockchain process to count the votes for the presidential election . As was later admitted, the blockchain process was only used in a monitoring manner in one district.

The counting of the runoff election was overshadowed by mishaps and verbal attacks.

Election result (official)

For a win in the first round, a share of 55 percent would have been necessary, but none of the candidates achieved this. As a result, a run-off election of the two candidates with the highest number of votes was originally supposed to be held on March 27, 2018. As in previous elections, the APC candidate was elected by a majority in the North provinces (including North West ), and the SLPP was elected by a majority in the South and East provinces , with the exception of the Kono District (here mainly C4C).
