Parliamentary election in Sierra Leone in 1951

The parliamentary elections in Sierra Leone in 1951 took place in November 1951 in Sierra Leone instead.

Electoral system

On the basis of the 1947 constitution, the Legislative Council , the parliament of the British Crown Colony of Sierra Leone, was expanded to 35 members. These members were made up of seven government officials, seven Europeans, 14 locals elected by local elections, and seven locals who were directly elected. This was the first time that locals had the majority of seats in the colony.

There were about 5,000 registered voters .

The National Council (NCSL) won three of the seven seats to be elected, followed by the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP) with two seats. The SLPP was supported by the indirect elected and designated members of the Crown Colony.

3276 votes were cast nationwide, of which 2438 were in Freetown . The remaining 838 votes were cast in two constituencies. The turnout was therefore around 65 percent.
