Maada Bio (2020)

Julius Maada Wonie Bio (born May 12, 1964 in Tihun ) has been President of Sierra Leone since April 4, 2018 . The former brigadier of the Sierra Leone Armed Forces was briefly head of state in 1996.

head of state

General Bio led the coup on January 16, 1996 against the military ruler Valentine Strasser , whose deputy he was until now. The new government initially suspended the elections planned for February 26, 1996 , through which Sierra Leone was to regain a civilian government. His takeover was viewed with skepticism at first, as Bio’s sister allegedly held an important position in the rebel organization Revolutionary United Front and he was said to have a close relationship with Nigeria's dictator Sani Abacha .

The first free elections in decades took place at the end of February, and Bio handed over power to the elected President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah on March 29, 1996 . The civil war , which had been going on since 1991, continued during Bio's short term in office, trying in vain to come to an understanding with the rebels.

Presidency

candidacy

Bio was considered a possible candidate for the office of vice president in the presidential election in 2007. In the presidential election in 2012, he was the candidate of the opposition Sierra Leone People's Party and stood against incumbent Ernest Koroma ( APC ). Bio lost the election on November 17, 2012 with 37.4 to 58.7 percent against Koroma. Although observers spoke of free and fair elections, Bio called on citizens to appeal the result to the Supreme Court and upheld allegations of manipulation.

In 2018 he ran again. This time he was able to prevail in the runoff election on March 31, 2018 against Samura Kamara , who was supported by the ruling party .

Term of office

The first year in office has been described as very successful by independent press. The successes include the repayment of large sums of national debt, the massive expansion of the health infrastructure and free basic education. Bio is the first president in the history of the country to have been without international financial aid for nine months.

Bio comes from the Sherbro people . He was one of 35 children of Paramount Chief Charlie Vonie Bio II.
