Sir Albert Michael Margai (born October 10, 1910 in Gbangbatoke , † December 18, 1980 ) was the second Prime Minister in the history of the Republic of Sierra Leone from April 30, 1964 to March 17, 1967. He was the half-brother of the first Prime Minister Milton Margai .

Albert Margai served as Minister of Finance (1962) and Minister of Education, Agriculture and Nature under his half-brother . His successor as President of Sierra Leone was Siaka Stevens .

Albert Margai was born in Gbangbatoke, Moyamba district , but grew up mostly in Freetown . Here he successfully completed his law studies in 1948.

Margai was a founding member of the Sierra Leone National Party in 1949. Margai was closely associated with Siaka Stevens . In 1957 Margai took over the chairmanship of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) only to resign this post a little later and to found the People's National Party together with Stevens . Margai was very polarized throughout his political career. Among other things, he was suspected of favoring certain tribes and of corruption . As a result, Margai lost the 1967 presidential election to his former companion and friend Siaka Stevens. Stevens took power with the All People's Congress . Margai did not want to accept the election defeat and instigated his friend David Lansana with a coup . Lansana took power for 4 days in March 1967 before Stevens regained rightful power with another coup.

In 1965 he was raised to Knight Bachelor ("Sir") by Elizabeth II .

Albert Margai is the father of the politician Charles Margai .
