Yahya James Kanu , also James Yaya Kanu , (* Magburaka , Tonkolili ; † December 29, 1992 in Freetown ) was Colonel of the Sierra Leone Armed Forces and as Chairman of the National Provisional Ruling Council (NPRC) in Sierra Leone - unconfirmed information according to - from April 29, 1992 to May 1, 1992 at the latest .

Kanu allegedly led the coup against President Joseph Saidu Momoh in April 1992. His role, however, remains unclear, as he was actually considered a friend of Momoh and denied any connection with the soldiers involved in the coup. Canoe was arrested immediately or after a few days by his successor Valentine Strasser and imprisoned in Pademba Road Prison . He was executed on December 29, 1992, or - according to Amnesty International - on December 30, 1992 with 25 (or 28) other people after a failed coup against Strasser . A conviction for high treason did not take place until after the execution.
