List of coups in Sierra Leone

This list includes successful and attempted coups and coups in Sierra Leone since independence on April 27, 1961.

1961 to 1975

Beginning Responsible background
March 21, 1967 David Lansana ( Albert Margai ) The high-ranking military David Lansana took power under the instigation of Albert Margais. Margai was previously Prime Minister and did not want to accept his electoral defeat by Siaka Stevens .
March 24, 1967 Ambrose Patrick Genda Many soldiers disagreed with Lansana's seizure of power and deposed him. Ambrose Patrick Genda took power as chairman of the National Reform Council .
March 27, 1967 Andrew Terence Juxon-Smith After disagreements within the National Reform Council, Andrew Terence Juxon-Smith came to power.
Apr 19, 1968 John Amadu Bangura , Patrick Conteh Bangura and Conteh, who were both supporters of Siaka Stevens, took power in a coup and handed it over to the duly elected prime minister a week later.

Since 1990

Apr 29, 1992 allegedly Yahya Kanu Allegedly under Yahya Kanu, the National Provisional Ruling Council took power in the state through a violent coup . His actual role is unclear as he was considered a friend of the democratically elected President Joseph Saidu Momoh .
Apr 29, 1992 Valentine Strasser Strasser coup against Kanu and became the youngest head of state on earth. He stood before the National Provisional Ruling Council, then the Supreme Council of State .
Dec 1992 at least 29 people failed; Prime suspects, including Yahya Kanu, were executed on December 29, 1992; but only afterwards sentenced to death for high treason.
Jan. 17, 1996 Julius Maada Bio Bio, as Strasser's deputy, overthrew him and a little later accepted the results of the first democratic elections in decades.
May 26, 1997 Johnny Paul Koroma Koroma from the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council overthrew the elected President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah and had to relinquish power to him on March 10 of the following year during the civil war. Possibly was Joseph Saidu Momoh involved herein.
