The Freetown Central Prison ( English Freetown Central Prison , commonly known mostly Pademba Road Prison ) is effective March 14, 1914, the Central and the maximum security prison of Freetown , the capital of Sierra Leone . It is located on Pademba Road in the center of the city. The prison was built for 324 prisoners and in 2015 housed 1,545 prisoners who were supervised by only 15 guards. In 2018 there were 2,215 inmates there.

The construction of a new prison elsewhere and the closure of the central prison are planned (as of March 2013).

Facilities, conditions

The prison is overcrowded. Reports describe the food supply and medication as "catastrophic" and the conditions as "bad and cruel".

Around three people are currently sharing a single cell. Beds, mattresses and sanitary facilities are not available. There is no electricity or water supply. Outbreaks are the order of the day, especially because security personnel receive insufficient wages and are open to bribery at any time. Many buildings are in such a dilapidated condition that roofs collapse. In principle, the prisoners themselves have to ensure that all buildings in the prison are clean. The main problem is the hygienic conditions and the lack of sanitary facilities, the lack of food and medical care.
