Ernest Bai Koroma (born October 2, 1953 in Makeni ) is a Sierra Leonean politician. He was President of Sierra Leone from September 17, 2007 to April 4, 2018 . He is chairman of the All People's Congress (APC). Before taking up his post he was the leader of the opposition.

Koroma's father was a member of the Temnian people , his mother was Limba . Ernest Bai Koroma himself is considered a Temne since his father was Temne. He is a Wesleyan Christian, married to Sia Koroma and has two daughters.

education

Koroma went to the Christian Sierra Leone Primary School, the state boys' school in Magburaka and studied at the famous Fourah Bay College of the University of Sierra Leone , which he successfully graduated in 1976. Koroma briefly taught at St. Francis Secondary School in Makeni before joining the Sierra Leone National Insurance Company in 1978 . Between 1978 and 2002 Koroma was a successful businessman.

Political career

On March 24, 2002, Koroma was elected chairman of the All People's Congress. He was a presidential candidate in the 2002 elections, but only got 22.3% of the vote, losing to Ahmed Tejan Kabbah of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party . Koroma won a seat in parliament.

After numerous differences of opinion within the party and power struggles, Koroma was re-elected as party leader in September 2005. He led the APC to the parliamentary and presidential elections in August 2007. The APC came out as a relatively surprising winner in the general election. Koroma was unable to achieve the required 55 percent of the vote in the first ballot, but was elected president on September 8 in the runoff election against his opponent and Vice President Solomon Berewa . On September 17, 2007, shortly after the official election results were announced, Koroma was sworn in as president. Although in his first term of office he pointed to successes in the reform of the health care system, tourism and road construction, critics denied him successful, serious reforms and pointed to the continued poor economic situation and corruption problems.

On November 17, 2012, Koroma again won the presidential election and was re-elected for a five-year term. This made him the first president since the end of the civil war in Sierra Leone to be re-elected. Koroma prevailed against Julius Maada Bio (SLPP) with 58.7 percent of the vote . The election result was only announced on November 23, 2012 after the opposition raised allegations of fraud. The electoral commission then had ten percent of the votes counted again. Observers judged the presidential election, which took place for the first time without the support of the UN, as free and fair.
