Makeni is the capital of the Northern Province and the Bombali District in Sierra Leone . The city is located in the Bombali-Sebora -chiefdom, about 120 kilometers northeast of the capital Freetown .

Makeni is the seat of the Makeni diocese .

The population is about 126,000 (as of 2015)

Makeni was known for a larger market and a mosque in Sierra Leone until the civil war . The Revolutionary United Front (RUF) made the city their base. There was major damage to the buildings during the civil war.

The University of Makeni is a university in Maken .
