Bombali is a district of Sierra Leone with around 423.00 inhabitants (as of 2020). It is located in the Northern province in the north of the country, on the border with Guinea . Its capital is Makeni , other cities are Kamakwie and Masingbi . Bombali covers an area of 7,985 km² and is divided into 13 chiefdoms (chiefdoms).
The inhabitants of the Bombali district mainly belong to the Temne and Limba ethnic groups and the majority are Muslim. The economy consists of small-scale mining, growing staple foods, and raising small livestock.
The literacy rate in 2004 for the city of Makeni was 59% (71% for men, 48% for women) and for the rest of the district 29% (men 40%, women 18%) and thus below the national average. 64.6% of the children in Makeni and 48.2% in the rest of the district attended school. In 2006, the district had 92 health facilities, including a state hospital, a military hospital, three mission hospitals, a community hospital, and three private clinics. Thus there was one such facility for every 4,439 inhabitants. In 2005, 1% of the population was HIV positive.
In 1963 there were 198,776 inhabitants, in 1974 there were 233,626 and in 1985 317,729. During the civil war in Sierra Leone , Bombali was a stronghold of the rebels of the Revolutionary United Front . The highest peaks in Bombali are the Kataba and the Gbengbe , each 782 meters above sea level.
