Kenema is a district of Sierra Leone with about 610,000 inhabitants (as of 2015). It belongs to the Eastern Province and is located in the southeast of the country, on the border with Liberia . Its capital is Kenema , other cities are Pandebu , Blama , Panguma , Barma and Boajibu . The district is divided into 16 chiefdoms (chiefdoms) and the city of Kenema.

Kenema covers an area of ​​6,053 km² and is the most populous district after the Western Area Urban (the state capital Freetown ). The highest point is the Kambui with 555  m ( 654  m ).

The population mainly belongs to the Mende and Temne ethnic groups ; both Muslims and Christians are represented here. The economy of the Kenema district consists of gold and diamond mining, coffee, cocoa and rice cultivation. Hundreds of thousands of Liberian refugees fled the civil war in Liberia until 2003 to Kenema and the neighboring Bo district .

In 2006 the district had 91 health facilities, including a state hospital, a state clinic, a missionary hospital, two missionary and three private hospitals. In 2005 1.9% of the residents were HIV positive. In 2004/2005 there were 475 primary and 34 secondary schools. The literacy rate in 2004 for the city of Kenema was 56% (67% for men and 46% for women), in the rest of the district it was 21% (men 30%, women 13%) and thus less than in the Koinadugu district , the district has the lowest literacy. 61.9% of the children in the city and 44.2% in the rest of the area attended school.
