Kenema is a city in Sierra Leone . It is also the capital of the Eastern Province and the Kenema District . With a population of around 200,000 (as of 2015) it is the second largest city in the country. The population of the Kenema district is about 610,000 (as of 2015).

The city is home to the Kenema State Hospital , among other things . Kenema is also the seat of the Kenema diocese .

geography

Kenema is about a six-hour drive southeast of the capital, Freetown . In the greater Kenema area, diamond fields were developed in 1931 , which are still exploited today and represent an important economic factor for the area and the entire country.

In 2018, a wild garbage dump in Kenema was closed and dismantled. The city administration has commissioned a company with waste disposal . At the collection point, rubbish is separated , plastic is melted and reused, metals are turned into pans and pots and dried green waste is turned into fuel.
