Karene was until 1961 and since mid-2017 is one of three districts in the North West province in Sierra Leone, which was also founded in 2017 . It has (as of 2020) 284,807 inhabitants in 13 chiefdoms . It is further divided into five constituencies and 21 wards .
The administrative center is Kamakwie .
