The Northern Province ( German Northern Province ) is located in the northeast of the West African state of Sierra Leone . As of 2017 it has 853,662 inhabitants.
Since mid-2017, the Northern Province has comprised four (previously five) districts of Bombali , Falaba , Koinadugu and Tonkolili and is subdivided into numerous chiefdoms . At the same time, the province became significantly smaller in terms of area through the separation of the North West province .
The provincial capital is Makeni , which is also the capital of the Bombali district.
