Tonkolili is a district of Sierra Leone with around 515,000 inhabitants (as of 2020). It belongs to the Northern Province and is located in the center of the country. Its capital is Magburaka , another city is Mile 91 . The district is divided into 11 chiefdoms (chiefdoms).
Tonkolili covers an area of 7,003 km². The highest peaks are Kunsulma (550 m), Kasebere (536 m) and Katikant (410 m)
The inhabitants of the Tonkolili district mainly belong to the Temne and Limba ethnic groups and the majority are Muslim.
The economy in Tonkolili consists of gold mining and agriculture. Tonkolili has iron ore deposits in Ferengbeia , gold and diamonds in various locations, which are mined by the African Minerals mining company, among others . The Bumbuna Hydroelectric Project on the Rokel (Seli) river should bring further development. The Mamunta National Park is also located in Tonkolili .
In 2006 the district had 95 health facilities, including a government hospital, a mission hospital, two mission clinics and an NGO clinic. In 2005, 0.5% of the residents were HIV positive. The literacy rate in 2004 was 30% (41% of men and 21% of women) and thus below the national average. 42.8% of the children attended school.
