The University of Sierra Leone is one of two state universities in the Republic of Sierra Leone . It is considered the oldest university in Black Africa and is now located on a hill on the outskirts of the capital Freetown .

history

The University of Sierra Leone was founded in 1827 as an Anglican School of Mission under the name Fourah Bay College (FBC). The facility quickly became the most popular and best on the African continent. This also gave Freetown its secret title as the “Athens of West Africa”. The theology and education faculties in particular were of the highest quality.

In 1972 the two independent colleges Fourah Bay and Njala were merged under the umbrella of the University of Sierra Leone. Since May 2005, however, the Njala University (NU) and the University of Sierra Leone (USL) have existed again independently of each other . The USL is divided into

  • Fourah Bay College (FBC; founded 1827),
  • College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS; founded 1988),
  • Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM; founded 1980) and the
  • School of Postgraduate Studies.

During the civil war from 1991 to 2002 , numerous university facilities were destroyed or looted.

Due to the Ebola virus epidemic in 2014 , the university was closed for several months (as of March 2015).

management

The university's chancellor has traditionally always been the incumbent President of Sierra Leone, since 2007 Ernest Koroma . Administratively and academically, however, the university is run by the Vice-Chancellor, who is also the Rector, Aiah A. Gbakima.

Campus & student life

The historic Fourah Bay College campus is located in the center of Freetown. The impressive main building, which dates from colonial times, was almost completely destroyed in the civil war. With international help, it is to be rebuilt and set up as a museum.

Today's main campus of the USL and Fourah Bay College is on the outskirts of Freetown on a small hill ( Mount Aureol ). Since the end of the civil war, numerous buildings and facilities have been refurbished or renovated, especially with international help from Scandinavia.

The campus includes:

  • Student accommodation, some of which are still in very poor condition
  • Library with more than 100,000 volumes and 55,000 journals
  • Student clubs and sports facilities
  • Basic medical care facility
