The original building of the Fourah Bay College ( English Old Fourah Bay College building ) is a national monument of the African state of Sierra Leone . It is located in the capital, Freetown, in Cline Town . It was proposed for inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2012 .
The historic building of Fourah Bay College , the first university in Black Africa, opened in 1827 and was the only higher education institution in West Africa until World War II . The building has four floors. The foundation stone was laid in 1845 by then Governor William Fergusson . After the Second World War, the building was used as the administration of the railway company and later as a court.
