Islam in the UK

The Bait-ul-Futuh - mosque is one of the largest mosques in Europe.

The existence of Islam as a religion in the United Kingdom has been mentioned since 1707.

With the Trinitarian Act 1812, Islam was officially recognized as a religion in the United Kingdom.

In the 1950s, there was an influx of Muslims through migration from the former British colonies . Today Islam is the second largest religion in all four countries of the United Kingdom. The number of Muslims was estimated at around 3.2 million in 2010.

Due to the growing number of Muslims, over 1,500  mosques - mostly Sunni - have now been built. Most of the mosques were built by Muslims with South Asian roots - Pakistani and Bengal  - and others by Arabs , Turks and Somalis .
