Richard L. Grimsdale
Richard Lawrence Grimsdale (born September 18, 1929 in Australia - † December 6, 2005 ) was a British electrical engineer and computer pioneer who designed the first transistorized computer .
His father, an English engineer, was working on a project for the Metropolitan-Vickers company . Grimsdale returned to England with his family, studied electrical engineering at Manchester University and graduated in 1950.
In 1953, while still a post graduate research student at Manchester University, he developed the Metrovick 950 from transistors . He also worked on the Ferranti Mark I and designed a 100 ns read-only memory for the ATLAS . In 1960 he started as a research engineer at Associated Electrical Industries . In 1967 he became a lecturer in electrical engineering at Sussex University . He did research on computer graphics, networks, and VLSI acceleration chips for 3D images.
