Sierra Leonean citizenship

The Sierra Leonean citizenship is the legal membership of a natural person to the Sierra Leonean state, the Republic of Sierra Leone .

Legal basis

The legal basis of the Sierra Leonean nationality forms of The Sierra Leone Citizenship Act of 1973, among others in 1976, 2006 and 2017 ( The Sierra Leone Citizenship (Amendment) Act ) has been adjusted.

Responsible for all matters of nationality is the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Sierra Leone , the Ministry of Internal Affairs .

Definitions

  • Mother exclusively refers to the biological mother.
  • Negro- African descent presupposes that father or mother or grandmother or grandfather are or were of Negro-African descent.

nationality

birth

All persons born before April 19, 1971 in Sierra Leone or who were legally resident there and who were not nationals of any other country became citizens of Sierra Leone on April 19, 1971, provided that

  • the father or mother or grandfather or grandmother was born in Sierra Leone and
  • the person is of Negro-African origin.

Anyone born on or after April 19, 1971 in Sierra Leone who fulfills the above requirements is a Sierra Leone citizen.

All persons who were born outside of Germany on or before April 18, 1971, but who meet the aforementioned requirements, are citizens of Sierra Leone.

ancestry

Any person who was born outside the country on or after April 19, 1971 and whose father would have been a Sierra Leonean citizen according to the aforementioned requirements before his death is a Sierra Leonean citizen by descent.

Others

Every person whose mother is or was a Sierra Leonean citizen on the basis of the aforementioned aspects and has no other citizenship is a Sierra Leonean citizen.

naturalization

Any woman who is or was married to a Sierra Leonean can apply to become a Sierra Leonean citizen. In addition, anyone who was born on or after April 18, 1971 in Sierra Leone and is of Negro-African descent can apply for naturalization, provided a number of requirements are met (including the father or mother must be a citizen Sierra Leones).

People without Negro-African descent can apply for naturalization after 15 years of permanent legal residence in Sierra Leone at the earliest.

Naturalized Sierra Leoneans are not allowed to vote in parliament.

Multiple citizenship and loss

The Dual citizenship is for Sierra Leoneans generally prohibited. Any Sierra Leonean citizen who is 21 years old and holds another citizenship will lose his or her Sierra Leonean citizenship before their 22nd birthday. If a new nationality is accepted, the Sierra-Leonean one will be lost on the day the new nationality is accepted.
