Harri Jõgisalu (born August 24, 1922 in Korju , Pärnu County ; † September 18, 2014 on the island of Kassari ) was an Estonian writer, educator and author of children's and youth literature .

Life

Jõgisalu attended various schools from 1930 and was at the Tallinn Boys' Trade and Business School from 1936 to 1940 . After another year of study at the Tallinn Commercial School for Boys, he worked temporarily in the German armed forces and in the civil service and as a primary school teacher during the German occupation of Estonia . From 1944 to 1946 he was a prisoner in a Soviet prisoner-of-war camp near Novgorod .

From 1946 he worked again as a teacher in Estonia and completed a distance learning course in biology and geography from 1947 to 1950 at what was then the Tallinn Pedagogical Institute . He also studied distance learning from 1951 to 1955 at the Leningrad Heart Institute in the biological-chemical faculty. After that he worked for a long time in the school service and from 1978 as a freelance writer. From 1984 to 1990 he was secretary of the Estonian Writers' Union and from 1990 to 1992 secretary of its presidium.

Harri Jõgisalu has been writing plays for school performances since 1948, but these were not printed until later. Since 1956 he has published his animal and children's stories in magazines, while his first book did not appear until 1967. He also wrote fables and writings on local history and edited numerous school books with colleagues.

Jõgisalu's books are characterized by a special love for nature and the emphasis on the careful treatment of people with nature. His children's books also focused on nature and the children in it.
