Estonian Writers' Union
The Estonian Writers' Union ( Estonian Eesti Kirjanike Liit , abbreviated EKL ) is the association of Estonian writers , literary translators and literary critics .
history
The Estonian Writers' Union was founded on October 8, 1922 under the name Eesti Kirjanikkude Liit on the III. Congress of the Estonian writer in the Hall of Tallinn founded. He also had his first seat in Tallinn, and in 1927 he moved to Tartu . On April 27, 1923, the association began publishing the monthly Looming , which is still one of the most important literary magazines in Estonia.
With the Soviet occupation of Estonia, the Estonian Writers' Union was declared dissolved by the occupation authorities on October 19, 1940. The "Soviet Writers' Union of Estonia" ( Eesti Nõukogude Kirjanike Liit ) took its place . October 1943 in Moscow was launched. From 1958 it was called the "Writers' Union of the Estonian SSR " ( Eesti NSV Kirjanike Liit ) and was active until the end of the Soviet Union.
During the German occupation of Estonia from 1941 to 1944, the original Estonian Writers' Union continued its work unofficially. In 1945 the "Estonian Foreign Association of Writers" ( Välismaine Eesti Kirjanike Liit ) was founded in Stockholm as an organization for Estonian writers living in exile. He saw himself as a counter-organization to the literary scene in Estonia during the Soviet Union, which was brought into line by the communists and placed under censorship .
With the restoration of freedom of expression and freedom of the press in Estonia and the regaining of Estonian independence, the association in Estonia called itself again in 1991 the Estonian Writers' Association . The foreign association fully joined him in October 2000 and disbanded.
The Estonian Writers' Union currently has 302 members (as of July 2007) and represents writers, literary translators, literary critics and scholars. Its seat is in the old town of Tallinn, a branch is in Tartu. The Estonian Writers' Association also owns a summer house in Käsmu on the Baltic Sea , which is regularly made available to domestic and foreign writers and translators.
