Vladimir Beekman

Vladimir Beekman (born August 23, 1929 in Tallinn ; †  October 3, 2009 ibid) was an Estonian writer and literary translator .

Life

Vladimir Beekman attended schools in what is now Tallinn's Nõmme district and in Narva and graduated from high school in Tallinn. In 1953 he graduated from the Tallinn Polytechnic Institute (now Tallinn University of Technology ) as a chemical engineer . In 1959 he joined the CPSU .

In 1956, Beekman began to work as a full-time writer and cultural functionary for the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic . From 1968 to 1971 he was the secretary of the board of the Estonian SSR Writers' Union , its first secretary from 1971 to 1976 and its chairman from 1983 to 1995.

Vladimir Beekman was a fairly prolific Estonian writer in the second half of the 20th century. He is known for his poems, novels, travel stories, and children's books. He has also translated numerous works from Russian , German , Dutch and Swedish into Estonian , including the books by Astrid Lindgren , Selma Lagerlöf , Annie MG Schmidt and Otfried Preußler and Joachim Hoffmann's non-fiction book “The Tragedy of the Russian Liberation Army” 1944/45 . Vladimir Beekman was married to the Estonian writer Aimée Beekman (* 1933).
