Annie MG Schmidt

Annie MG Schmidt (born May 20, 1911 in Kapelle as Anna Maria Geertruida Schmidt, † May 21, 1995 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch writer and journalist . She is considered to be one of the most famous children's book authors worldwide . Many of her works have also been translated into German, for example The mysterious Minusch , Heiner and Hanni , Witches and so , The flying elevator and the collection of poems A pond full of ink . Also Wiplala can be found in many children's rooms.

Life

Schmidt grew up in Kapelle ( Zeeland ) as the daughter of a pastor . She had a difficult childhood as a pastor's daughter in a rural environment. Her mother took care of her because two daughters had died before her. She had hardly any contact with her father. Schmidt's mother taught Schmidt to read and write very early on and introduced her to literature. At the age of 14 Schmidt sent her first poems to the poet Willem Kloos , who encouraged her to continue writing. For them, writing was always an escape from the hostile environment. Schmidt was amazed to see the introduction of electricity, the first car in the village and the beginning of the film medium. The twenties shaped it deeply with the rise of the women's movement, the "real sexual revolution". Pushed by her parents, she studied law in The Hague in 1929 . In 1930 she went to Germany as an au pair for a year to learn the German language.

Only then did she start her own path as a librarian in Middelburg . On the advice of her mother, she made her debut in 1938 in the Christian magazine "Opwaartse Wegen" with two poems. At the beginning of the Second World War she became the library manager in Vlissingen . She refused to hang up the “Forbidden to Jews” sign, did not remove the books banned by the Nazis, and did not allow Nazi newspapers in the reading room. Thereupon she was summoned to the NS mayor. The latter pressured her to release her brother, who was sitting in the Nazi prison, if she was doing propaganda for the Nazis. She didn't go into that.

After the war she started working for the newspaper “ Het Parool ” in Amsterdam . She was accepted into the circle of journalists, intellectuals and artists and began again to write poetry and little plays. During this time, Schmidt worked with some of her colleagues in the cabaret group De Inktvis . She met her husband Dick van Duijn through a personal ad. In 1950 her first children's book "Het Fluitketeltje" was published. This was followed by a veritable stream of publications: poems, stories, columns, children's books, radio play series, cabaret pieces, television series, plays and musicals. During this time she wrote the first Dutch soap "De familie Doorsnee" for a radio station, which brought her national fame. In this soap for the first time in the history of the Dutch media she had a homosexual appear with the salesman Fred.

In the late 1950s, Schmidt was the most famous children's book author in the Netherlands. In 1957, “Wiplala” became the “Children's Book of the Year”. With “Pension Hommeles” she entered a new medium, the television series. She worked with the composer Harry Bannink and together they wrote the first Dutch musical “Heerlijk duurt het langst”. During this time she never neglected writing children's books. The illustrations for all of her Heiner and Hanni books arose from her close friendship with the graphic artist Fiep Westendorp .

In the late 1960s she moved to the south of France with her husband, who had sold his business. In 1981 he died after years of depression. Schmidt went back to Amsterdam, where she almost completely lost her sight . In 1987 she received the Constantijn Huygens Prize , a year later the " Hans Christian Andersen Prize ", which is also known as the Nobel Prize for Young People's Literature. It was presented to her by Astrid Lindgren . Annie MG Schmidt committed suicide on the night of her 84th birthday, on May 21, 1995, suicide . Her grave is in the Zorgvlied cemetery in Amsterdam.
