Bernhard Esau , not infrequently also Bernhardt or Bernard (born December 9, 1957 in Swakopmund , South West Africa ), is a former Namibian politician of SWAPO .

Esau was Minister in the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources from 2010 to November 13, 2019 .

Esau studied economics and accounting in the USA and Namibia. He worked in business in the 1970s and 1980s. From 1995 to 2019 Esau was a member of the Namibian National Assembly . Before he became Minister for Fisheries , he was Vice Minister for Trade and Industry (1999–2008) and Vice Minister for Mining and Energy (2008–2010).

Corruption affair

Esau, together with Justice Minister Sacky Shangala , resigned as minister on November 13, 2019 as part of the Fishrot affair . He was arrested on November 23, 2019 and released the following day. The arrest warrant was rejected by a court due to formal errors. Another arrest followed a few days later. It sits 2,019 (as of July 2020) in since November custody .
