Gert Hanekom

Gerhardus "Gert" Jacobus Hanekom (born March 30, 1930 in Redelinghuys , South Africa ; † December 5, 1999 in Windhoek ), rarely also Gerd Hanekom , also known as Oom Gert (Uncle Gert), was a Namibian politician of the SWAPO . Hanekom emigrated from South Africa to South West Africa between 1956 and 1958 .

Hanekom was Namibian Minister of Finance in the Nujoma I cabinet from 1992 to 1995 , before he was Minister of the Environment in the Nujoma II cabinet from 1995 to 1997 .

In 1975 he founded the company Hanekom & Kie, which developed into the local branch of PricewaterhouseCoopers .

Hanekom died on December 5th, 1999 at the age of 69 after suffering from a long history of cancer and heart disease. Hanekom received a state funeral . He left behind his wife and three children.
