Theo-Ben Gurirab (born January 23, 1938 in Usakos , South West Africa , † July 14, 2018 in Windhoek ) was a Namibian politician .

He was elevated to hero status on July 16, 2018 , and a street in Windhoek was named after him on July 21, 2019.

Life path

Theo-Ben Gurirab obtained a school teacher diploma at the Augustineum in Okahandja in 1960 . In 1962 he left Namibia and went into political exile in Tanzania . After receiving a scholarship from the United Nations in 1963, he earned a diploma in 1971 and a doctorate in international political science from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia , USA . From 1972 to 1986 he was head of the SWAPO representation at the United Nations. From March 1990 until his appointment as Prime Minister on August 28, 2002, he was Namibia's First Foreign Minister . He held the post of Prime Minister until March 20, 2005. As Foreign Minister he was also President of the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1999 and 2000 . From March 20, 2005 to March 19, 2015 he was President of Parliament .

In 2008 Gurirab was elected President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union for three years .

Gurirab was married and had two grown sons.
