The Augustineum ( English Augustineum Secondary School , formerly Augustineum Training College ) is one of the oldest schools in Namibia . It was founded in 1866 and, after moving several times, is located in Khomasdal in the capital Windhoek .

The school was initially founded in Otjimbingwe before it moved to Okahandja in 1890 and has finally been based in Windhoek since 1968.

The Augustineum has had a school partnership with the Oberschule am Leibnizplatz in Bremen since 2018 .

history

Missionary Carl Hugo Hahn founded the Augustineum as an Evangelical Lutheran training center and for the training of teachers in Otjimbingwe. The name goes back to the African church father Augustine of Hippo . As other sources write, it does not go back to an Augusta von Lippe-Detmold . The benefactress from the house of Lippe-Detmold, who supported the establishment together with other German nobles, was rather the wife of Leopold III. Elisabeth, b. Princess of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt .

In 1890 the facility had 14 students and was headed by missionary Gottlieb Viehe , who also carried out the move to Okahandja.

In 1959 there was a major student uprising as part of the massacre in the Old Location in Windhoek. Hidipo Hamutenya was instrumental in this. Nine years later the school moved to Windhoek.

Since Namibia's independence in 1990, the school's level of education has declined massively. In 2013 it was one of the six worst schools in the country.
