Adam Malik

Adam Malik (born July 22, 1917 in Pematang Siantar , North Sumatra ; † September 5, 1984 in Bandung , West Java ) has been the Foreign Minister of Indonesia since 1966 . He also served as Indonesian Vice President from 1978 to 1983.

Malik was previously ambassador to the Soviet Union and Poland between 1959 and 1963 . The negotiations with the Netherlands on the situation of West Irian were outstanding . His political skill earned him the nickname "Kantjil" ( dwarf deer ), a term that corresponds in German with "Reineke Fuchs" (tenacity and cunning).

From 1966 he represented Indonesia at the UN General Assembly and was its chairman in 1971.

In his honor, the Adam Malik Prize has been awarded as the national media prize in Indonesia since 2002 .
