Jorge E. Illueca

Jorge Enrique Illueca Sibauste (born September 7, 1918 in Panama City ; † May 3, 2012 ) was a Panamanian politician and diplomat . In 1984 he was president of his country for a few months .

Career

Illueca studied law at the University of Panama , Harvard University and the University of Chicago . In 1955 he received his doctorate as Dr. jur. and then worked as a lawyer and for several years as a journalist. He became one of the most important and respected lawyers in his country. At the same time he taught as a professor at the university.

In 1968 he was appointed as a negotiator for the Treaty on the Panama Canal and was jointly responsible for the conclusion of this agreement.

His political career began in 1970, initially at the United Nations in the field of international law. From 1976 to 1981 he was Panama's permanent ambassador to the UN. In 1983 he was elected President of the 38th UN General Assembly and held this office until 1984.

From 1981 to 1983 he was Foreign Minister and from 1982 also Vice President. On February 13, 1984, he succeeded Ricardo de la Espriella Toral as President and remained in office until October 11, 1984. His successor was Nicolás Ardito Barletta Vallarino . After his time as President, he returned to the United Nations.

Illueca has made a name for itself with its membership in the International Court of Arbitration.

Jorge Enrique Illueca Sibauste was married and had four children.
