Laurentino Cortizo (born January 30, 1953 in Panama City ) is a Panamanian politician . He is the winner of the 2019 presidential election and has been President of Panama since July 1, 2019, succeeding Juan Carlos Varela .

Life

Cortizo was born in Panama City to Laurentino Cortizo, an immigrant from Galicia (Spain), and Esther Cohen de Cortizo. He studied at Valley Forge ( Pennsylvania , USA) and Norwich University (Vermont, USA) military colleges . He received his Masters and PhD in Business Administration and International Trade in Austin , Texas (USA). He then worked for the Organization of American States in Washington. He returned to Panama in 1985.

Cortizo is married and has two children.

Political career

From 1994 to 2004 Cortizo was a member of parliament ( National Assembly ). In 2004 he joined the Partido Revolucionario Democrático (PRD), which is considered to be social democratic . The President Martín Torrijos appointed him Minister for Agricultural Development in 2004. In 2006, he resigned from office in protest at conditions that the United States set as the basis for a free trade agreement.

In 2008 he ran unsuccessfully to the presidency in the primaries. He was elected as a candidate for the PRD for the 2019 presidential election. He won the 2019 presidential election with around 31% of the vote, ahead of former Foreign Minister Rómulo Roux . Cortizo announced that he would devote himself in particular to the fight against corruption .
