Harmodio Arias Madrid

Harmodio Arias Madrid (born July 3, 1886 in Penonomé ; † December 23, 1962 ) was the 16th President of Panama .

Arias was born as the son of Antonio Arias and Carmen Madrid in Penonomé and had three siblings. His brother Arnulfo Arias Madrid later also became President of Panama. He studied law in Southport , England , and graduated from the University of Cambridge . As a lawyer , he worked for the law firm Fábrega and Arias for several years . After entering politics, he quickly became Undersecretary of State for Foreign Relations, a member of the Codificadora Commission and Panama's extraordinary representative in Argentina and the USA . During these years he also taught Roman and International Law . He was also a member of the Academy of History in Buenos Aires and Caracas and the Panamanian Society for International Law. From 1910 to 1912 he worked mainly as a specialist author .

On June 5, 1932, he succeeded Ricardo Joaquín Alfaro Jované as President of Panama and remained in office for the entire remaining term of office until October 1, 1936. His successor was Juan Demóstenes Arosemena Barreati .
