Ricardo Martinelli (2009)

Ricardo Alberto Martinelli Berrocal (born March 11, 1952 in Panama City ) is a Panamanian politician and businessman . He was President of Panama from 2009 to 2014.

Life

Ricardo Martinelli is the son of Ricardo Martinelli Pardini and Gloria Berrocal. After his training at the Staunton Military Academy in Staunton , Virginia (United States), he studied at the University of Arkansas . There he obtained a bachelor's degree in economics . He then studied at INCAE Business School, where he received his master's degree . Martinelli is married to Marta Linares and has three children. He is the CEO of Súper 99 , a retail chain in Panama.

Martinelli is party leader of the Cambio Democrático (CD). On May 3, 2009, he won the presidential election against Balbina Herrera with around 60 percent of the vote . The main topic of the election campaign was the five billion dollar expansion of the Panama Canal , which is of great importance for the country. On July 1, 2009, he was sworn in as President. In the 2014 presidential election , Martinelli was not allowed to run for a second term under the constitution.

In 2015 Martinelli, who had since fled to Miami, was charged with illegal wiretapping. In 2018 he was extradited to Panama and arrested there.
