Balbina Del Carmen Herrera Araúz (born November 24, 1954 in Panama City , Panama ) is a Panamanian politician . She was a candidate in the presidential election in May 2009.

Origin and education

After finishing school, Herrera studied at the National Institute and the University of Panamá . She achieved a bachelor's degree in agricultural science . She also studied pedagogy after her first degree . Herrera started her political career as a member of the Panamanian Student Federation . In 1973 she became a member of the Partido Revolucionario Democrático party . In the 1980s she worked for Manuel Noriega .

2009 presidential candidacy

In May 2009 she was the presidential candidate of the former ruling party Partido Revolucionario Democrático (PRD). She lost the presidential election on May 3, 2009 with 37 percent of the vote against the politician Ricardo Martinelli .
