Ricardo de la Espriella Toral (born September 5, 1934 in Panama City ) was the 37th President of Panama .

De la Espriella, previously Vice-President since 1978, took over the office of President on July 31, 1982 as successor to Aristides Royo and remained in office until February 13, 1984. He was succeeded by Jorge E. Illueca . Together with General Rubén Darío Paredes , he managed to bring about an alliance between the military and the civil government and together to initiate several reforms. A special court was set up to monitor compliance with the agreements reached in order to ensure a lasting peace between the government and the military junta. In the area to be secured, this court was given the same rights as the Supreme Court.
