Ernesto Pérez Balladares

Ernesto Pérez Balladares (born June 29, 1946 in Panama City ) is a Panamanian politician . He was the 46th President of Panama from September 1, 1994 to September 1, 1999.

Life

Pérez studied economics in Pennsylvania . After his return to Panama he went into politics and founded the Partido Revolucionario Democratico (PRD) party. In his political career he held many offices, including Minister of Planning and Economics, President of the Banking Authority, Member of the Legislative Commission, Member of the Board of Directors of the Free Port Area and the State Port Authority. As a diplomat he has been to Europe , Japan , Lebanon , Singapore and Sri Lanka . He was instrumental in the Panama Canal Treaties of 1977 and 1982.

He won the election for president in 1994 just ahead of Mireya Moscoso , who finally succeeded him in 1999. Balladares replaced Guillermo Endara Galimany in his office.
