Demetrio Basilio Lakas

Demetrio Basilio Lakas (born August 29, 1925 in Colón ; † November 2, 1999 ) was the 35th President of Panama .

Lakas went to school in San Jose and learned the trade of a businessman. Later he went to the Panama Canal Zone to college and became an art assistant. In 1946 he moved to Texas Wesleyan College and learned the profession of administrative assistant. He then immediately went to Texas Technological College , where he completed his training as an engineer. A short time later he became President of the Social Insurance Agency and President of the Provisional Government Assembly.

On December 19, 1969, he succeeded José María Pinilla Fábrega as President and remained in this office until October 11, 1978. He was the first President of Panama to hold a term of almost nine years. He was succeeded by Aristides Royo .
