history
Penonomé was founded in 1581. "Penó nomé" means in the language of the locals Nomé was executed . Nomé was the chief of a local Indian tribe who was killed by a Spanish colonial official. After the conquest of Panama City by Henry Morgan in 1671, the city was the capital of Panama for a short time.
particularities
In the city you can find descendants of Chinese immigrants who have often started their own business with small supermarkets ("chinos"). The population consists mainly of mestizos , Chinese and African American . In February there is carnival all over Panama and after Las Tablas Penonomé is a popular destination.
The church of Penonomé and the local government are in the town center. There is also a small museum in Penonomé with irregular opening times. The city has two main streets: La Avendida Juan Demmóstenes Arosemena and the Interamericana. Since 2006 there have also been youth housing communities operated by the SOS Children's Villages and financed by the Hermann Gmeiner Fund. The small town has undergone major changes in recent years: there is now a mall with a large supermarket, a cinema , a swimming pool and several shops.
Especially at carnival and the national festivals, the otherwise quiet city is transformed into a colorful spectacle with numerous open-air discos and lively street parades.
Penonomé is also a popular destination for exchange students who travel to Panama with AFS and are housed in host families in this village .
